Nike
- $18.5 billion company that is less than 40 years old.
- Launched by a former University of Oregon runner with an accounting degree named Phil Knight.
- Knight began by selling ASICS shoes out of the trunk of his car to athletes at track meets.
- He eventually launched his own brand, went public and Nike now owns Converse, Cole-Haan, Hurley and Starter among other global brands.
Under Armour
- Founded 12 years ago by a University of Maryland football player who was tired of wearing wet cotton T-shirts during games and practices.
- Kevin Plank took the train to Manhattan’s garment center meeting with contractors and fabric companies until he found people who could create the product he wanted.
- Plank had his football playing friends test out the product and help him market it.
